Pimp My Coop

Yeah, they're bigger :). So the chickens are now 4+ weeks old and they are Huge! Not only have they grown, but they appear to be fully molted - and their feathers are coming in so beautifully! The Silver-Laced Wyandottes (like Tabbitha here) have really surprised me with how pretty they are becoming (as I have to say, they were not the cutest of the flock as small chicks). So all this means that we must hasten the preparations for moving these lovely ladies to their outdoor home. This means finishing the work we started inside the outbuilding where we intend to house them and building the outdoor (movable) pen that will protect them from predators of the air when they are out and about in the yard. As you can see from the pics, we were hard at work on this particular family project this weekend!

It's coming together and we are very excited! Now I adore my husband, but I did have to remind him this weekend that in his long (and rather impressive) academic career which included being a Fullbrighter and earning his PhD, the only near failing grade he Ever got was in...woodshop :). I have to hand it to him, however, he put together a great plan.

While the outdoor pen will be movable (which in case you don't know, movable pens are totally in vogue in Backyard Chicken Keeping circles), it will also be built such that when it is up against the outbuilding the chickens can access it directly from a ramp through one of the windows.

These chickens are going to have quite the deluxe accommodations when we are done. They will be spoiled (like all our animals).
