Today was one of those lazy, beautiful Sundays at the farm that embodies everything that I love about the farm and Sundays. We did…hmmm…nothing, as evidenced by this photo (with our breathtaking mountains in the background). And we loved every moment of it! In our family this is something we call “booging around”. “Booging” is a derivative of the term “Boog”. What’s the matter? Never heard of “Boog”? Well, I’ll try to explain…

Now no one in the family is entirely certain of how or just when the term “Boog” came to be a crucial part of our family’s vernacular, but Eli, who by our collective memory used it first, claims that it was introduced by our dog, Suki. A bit dubious, I know. But however it came to be, let me attempt to define the meaning of “Boog” which is one of those terms that is a bit ambiguous and very subject to context.
Main Entry: boog
Pronunciation: \bōōg\
Function: Noun
Etymology: Dog?
1 : Did you hear that he doesn’t like dogs? What a dumb boog. (derogatory)
2 : Suki looks so cute! She’s such a little boog. (complimentary)
3: What are you boogs up to? (non-committal)
Booging
Pronunciation: \bōōgĭn\
Function: Verb
1: What are you guys doing? Nothing, just boogin around.
2: Look at these dogs sleeping on the floor. Yeah, they’re boogin.
3: Boogin on a sunny afternoon.
Got it, boog? Oh and feel free to adopt boog into your vocabulary. No one will know what you are talking about and you’ll probably sound like a dumb boog, but around here, you’ll fit right in.
